The Piedmont region of Virginia is one of great beauty and one of the most acclaimed artists preserving the region through his works of art is Tom Neel. Now in his 24th year, this self taught artist has created and sold his paintings which can be found in private and corporate collections extensively here, from coast to coast and in many parts of Europe. It is rare for a collector to have just one of his paintings and he has become one of the area’s most commissioned and best known landscape painters.
While Tom Neel paints other places and other things, mostly in oil, some in acrylic, the Piedmont region of Virginia is home and his rich oil paintings show his emotion and passion for this area like no other. Neel is not one to do the same thing over and over again. To see a body of his work, is to truly see wide artistic diversity and vision - be it an intimate look at spring or the intensity of a humid summer day. Low morning fog across a meadow or the most dramatic sunsets and varied blues the blue ridge mountains give us. This is where he brings the viewer’s senses. Neel wants to do more than just have you see what he sees, he wants you to experience it in a way you may never have thought you could.
Neel is not an award seeker, choosing rather to be judged only by those who covet his art. Nick Arundel, founder of Great Meadow, co founder of the Piedmont Environmental Council and Friends of the National Zoo has said “He is one of the most important artists we have.” Patrick O’Connell, owner and chef of The inn At Little Washington, who commissioned Tom Neel for his creative services with great regularity, said of “Onward and Upward”, the 30th anniversary painting Neel created for him, “It is the perfect visual image!”, and Richard Clarke, on air counter-terrorism consultant for ABC news, simply said of his commissioned painting by Neel, “You nailed it!” To define Neel’s work is to first look at his use of color, a fresh palette that makes you feel alive and there. Next is his subject matter, for he is constantly looking at the diversity of his surroundings, as he knows it is the emotional connection that creates interest and his composition is what keeps you there.
Tom Neel is the Artist in Residence for Creighton Farms Resort Golf Community, working with members on both a commissioned basis and exclusively providing original works of art throughout the main floor of the 30,000 sf clubhouse. His work can also be seen as an important addition to the Winchester Medical Center’s state of the art expansion. He is also a columnist for The Middleburg Eccentric newspaper - The Artist’s Perspective.
Approachable, Tom Neel is the best friend to those thinking they are creatively challenged. He is known to offer motivational advise on the fly, swooping the inquirer up and filling them with the confidence to be creative! His work as a decade long judge of the Congressional Art Show and lead judge for the Loudoun Education Foundation, allow him to inspire young artists to follow their creative dreams.
Nothing is worth having without giving back and the list of those who have raised thousands through the donation of Tom Neel’s art is a long one. Care, Project Hope, Capital Care, The Middleburg Community Center, Middleburg Humane Foundation, Leesburg Abused Women’s Shelter, American Cancer Society, The Barns at Rose Hill, Aldie Mill, The Hill School, Notre Dame Academy (now Middleburg Academy), Wakefield School and the list goes on.
